The term is usually associated with the Health Insurance Marketplace run by the federal government.
A number of states operate their own exchanges.
15 states (including the District of Columbia) run their own exchanges.
6 states operate in association with the federal exchange. Consumers in these states apply for and enroll in coverage through Healthcare.gov.
All the other states utilize the federally run exchange located online at called HealthCare.gov.
